In this video clip, Dr. Johnson describes her definition of a healthy marriage. This is based on her many years of research and hundreds of hours working with clients. Her conclusions are also consistent with the work of other marital researchers such as John Gottman. As she points out, all the research says that the essential element of a healthy marriage is not about fighting, or about having things in common. The essential element is emotional responsiveness between the couple.
Below, you can see a short clip of EFT at work. Here Dr. Johnson works with a couple to help them identify their emotional responses, such as feeling overwhelmed and shutting down. She then coaches and guides them so they can then help each other understand why they are shutting down and what is it that they need when they start shutting down. Most people need validation and a feeling that they are being heard and being seen as an individual. Click here to read a step-by-step description of Emotion Focused Couples Therapy.
